AKOKO MARY was born in 1984 in Kinene, one of twelve children. Her father died when she was very young. Two of her brothers were captured and died in the Bush. She married in 1999 and they went to Chope IDP Camp in 2000 where she gave birth to three children. The rebels invaded the camp and killed many people. When the rebels entered, they fled the other direction and hid in the bush until the rebels left. They returned to the camp, only to find many had been killed. Mary was saved in 2002 but turned away from God during the next few years. She divorced in 2004 and left the camp, returning to Kinene. She married Alfred, who works at Abaana’s Hope, in 2009 and they have one child. She is working for school fees for her children.
