In Psalm 27:10, David reminds us of God’s unconditional love for us. Even when we are rejected by this world or those closest to us, the Lord remains faithful, and He will receive us with open arms. He remains present in our lives, giving us hope in the midst of our pain like He did for Ajok Agnes. Agnes was abandoned and rejected by her family with no land, no home, and no hope. But God did not abandon her. He gave her the hope of salvation offered through His son, Jesus. The Lord used the Women’s Refuge Center at Abaana’s Hope to share this good news with Agnes.
Even though she was skeptical at first, she continued to listen to the team from Abaana’s Hope who visited her and shared the gospel with her. When they left, she continued to think about all they had told her, and the Lord worked on her heart. The more she listened, the more the team shared with her, and the more she learned. Next, she was invited to join the Women’s Refuge Center (WRC), a three-year program designed to assist vulnerable mothers and disciple them through the Word of God.
The sole purpose of the WRC is to teach these women to rely and depend upon Jesus for the forgiveness of sins and the provisions of life. Each woman is given vocational training and taught responsible money-management skills with the goal to purchase their own home and earn an income to support their children. Most importantly, these women are exposed to the life-changing message of the gospel and the love of Jesus Christ. As of September 2025, Agnes became the 16th woman to graduate from the program.
“I have seen the goodness of the Lord, because in the past, I was misusing my life. Nowadays, I’m listening from the Word of God, and I’m growing,” Agnes said through a translator.
Agnes, 32, is Acholi by tribe from Kimora, Uganda. When she was one year old, her mother left her with her father. Her mother eventually remarried and had three more children. Agnes was not able to attend school past the grade level of primary 2 because her father couldn’t afford the expensive fees.
“By that time, there was a serious war, so the rebels were killing people, slaughtering people like animals. That is why we decided to run to the camp,” Agnes said.
During the time the LRA rebels were active, Agnes and her father lived in the internally displaced persons camp in Paicho. While the rebels were still a threat, Agnes also faced a threat at home. Her father was a serious drinker. When she reached the age of five, her father continued to drink heavily, so she left her father to live with her grandmother. She lived with her grandmother until she was 15 years old.
Eventually, Agnes married and had 3 children – Daniel, Geofrey, and Innocent. (Innocent passed away from kidney failure.) Over time, Agnes’s husband married several more women. When Agnes questioned why he continued to marry women and bring them home, he told her to pack her things and leave. She had nowhere else to go, so she returned to her parents. They, too, chased her away from their home and told her to find her own way of living.
She found work as a cook, but her employers could not pay her for long. Agnes was again on her own without family support, a home, and a source of income to provide for her two children. Life was so difficult she had to tell her sons, “You can’t go to school, and if we don’t find anything, we will not eat.”
Since she entered the WRC three years ago, Agnes has had a roof over her head, a paying job, and her two children have been able to get an education. Daniel, 17, is attending a vocational school and Geofrey, 12, is a student at Living Stones Christian School at Abaana’s Hope. Agnes worked in the piggery and the ministry helped her save money to purchase land of her own. In June 2025, she and her sons moved into their newly built otlum and she graduated from the WRC in September. Most importantly, she has found a saving faith in Jesus Christ.
“Now, I have two acres of land. That is the goodness of the Lord. God is the one who gave that land to me, not myself,” Agnes said. “I praise God for this land and for allowing me to grow in His Word. Now, all my kids know the Word of God, and they are obedient.”
Please continue to pray for Agnes as she cares for her children and pursues the Lord. Pray for God’s provision, protection, and strength for Agnes and her family. Please also pray that Agnes and her children will continue to grow in their relationship with the Lord and their knowledge of His Word.
